Res-pite: A short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant
Our respite program was created to provide temporary care to the pets of those who are facing one of life’s difficult hardships. We know that sometimes life takes us down a path we did not plan to walk and in those moments, caring for a beloved pet is simply not possible. For those facing hospitalization for illness or injury, navigating a housing/financial crisis, our program offers a safe place for their pet(s) to shelter temporarily, for up to 90 days, until life gets back on track.
There is no fee for this service as we understand it will most often be needed by those who cannot comfortably bear the added financial burden of boarding when facing large medical bills or the financial hardship of job loss or broken families. Its ability to succeed will depend heavily on donations. If you would like to make a donation in support of this program, you can donate here. With your help, we will be able to keep families together.
*Please note that priority will be given to those working with other agencies or social workers to resolve the need for respite care.
*It is not in line with our mission to use the resources of our organization to enable accidental or backyard breeding of dogs and do require they be altered or the family agrees to allow Helping Hounds to spay/neuter them while in our care.
If you are in need of respite care for a pet, please submit your inquiry here.
Although we can’t share the story of all our guests, we have been given permission to share some of their stories. Read our respite stories here.
