HHDR BARK Foster Program
Our mission is to provide a compassionate approach to dog rescue by matching homeless dogs from overcrowded shelter systems with loving homes. We love our local dogs as much as we love our southern friends – where their story begins is not what matters to us; however, this type of partnership of transferring dogs from shelter to our adoption program, has never been needed or embraced by local shelters. Years ago, we turned our efforts to welcoming local owner surrenders to ease the numbers entering the shelter system and we continued to assist rural dog control facilities when asked, but our hearts have been breaking at the plight of Syracuse stray dogs as the phone calls come in, the social media posts are endless and they show up at our doors more and more often.
We built an adoption program that helps dogs leave an empty kennel through adoption so shelters doing this difficult work could help the next one in need.
With the firm belief that leaving them on the streets and not sending help when needed cannot be the community that our animal welfare system creates, we approached city officials and B&R Bunkhouse to figure out how we can help. We are excited to announce the launching of an entirely new program –
HHDR BARK – Building Adoption Ready K9s. As with everything we do, we need your help to make this a success.
We are looking for some heroes. People who are willing to open their homes for an average of 3 weeks to foster a Syracuse stray dog preparing him for a forever family. These families will have the full support of HHDR including everything needed to temporarily house the dog as well as access to our trainer and our staff. Together, we will create the community that supports the efforts of dog control, cruelty officers and the city shelter that keeps dogs and humans safe.
The dogs will be assessed to make sure they are a fit for your home. You help prepare the dog for family life and let us know everything you learn about him. You give an average of 3 weeks of your time, love and home and the dog enters our program ready for adoption. It is easy to get started – just complete the application. Can’t foster? Please consider making a donation to help offset the additional vet bills, crates, food and needs these dogs will have.
